Community News: Inmates moved to Ottawa and Lindsay as outbreak shuts Brockville Jail
An outbreak at the Brockville jail has forced the temporary closure of the aging downtown facility with all inmates being transferred to Lindsay for testing and a mandatory 14-day quarantine, according to a memo from the jail supervisor circulated Monday.
All new admissions will instead be bound for the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, according to the memo, and all inmates will be in a two-week quarantine.
Officials with the Ministry of the Solicitor General have not yet confirmed the prisoner transfer and have not yet commented on the extent of the outbreak.
The Lindsay jail, a medium to maximum-security facility with a capacity of 1,184 prisoners, has already experienced several COVID-19 outbreaks this year.
The Brockville jail, which is set for major renovations and expansion, currently has a capacity of only 48 inmates.
“The inmates will be moved from the Brockville jail today (Monday) and, effective immediately, all new admissions will be temporarily redirected to OCDC for a period of at least 14 days, and a formal notice will be coming out shortly to the police agencies impacted by this decision,” the memo states.
